6 Ways to Improve Digestion Naturally

A calm, balanced gut changes everything — energy, mood, skin, focus. Digestion is where every part of you begins. When it works well, nutrients are absorbed, hormones stay balanced, and inflammation stays quiet. When it doesn’t, even the healthiest meal can leave you bloated, tired, or off.

Gut health isn’t hype — it’s science. About 70% of your immune system lives in the gut (source). Around 90% of serotonin, your feel-good neurotransmitter, is made there too (source). Supporting digestion means supporting your whole body.

1. Slow Down

Digestion starts in the brain. When you’re rushed or distracted, your body stays in “fight or flight,” not “rest and digest.” Stress can influence digestive secretions, gut motility, and how comfortable digestion feels.

Try this: Take three deep breaths before eating. Sit down. Put your phone away. Let your body know it’s safe to receive food.

2. Chew More Than You Think

Chewing breaks food into smaller pieces and mixes it with saliva, where enzymes begin breaking down carbohydrates and fats. Taking the time to chew thoroughly gives digestion a head start before food reaches your stomach.

Try this: Notice the texture change as you chew. Aim for 25–30 chews per bite, or simply slow enough that your mouth does most of the work. Proper chewing has been linked to better nutrient absorption and reduced bloating (source).

3. Support Stomach Acid

Low stomach acid is common — and often mistaken for too much. Adequate acid is what breaks down protein, absorbs minerals like zinc and iron, and kills unwanted bacteria (source).

Try this: Start your day with warm lemon water or a teaspoon of raw apple cider vinegar in water. Before larger meals, take a few drops of digestive bitters (our favorite form of gentle support).

4. Hydrate Consistently

Every digestive process depends on hydration — from saliva to stomach acid to nutrient transport. Dehydration alone can cause constipation, fatigue, and sluggish digestion.

Try this: Hydration helps keep stool softer and supports normal bowel movements. Rather than trying to catch up with large amounts at once, drink regularly throughout the day and adjust based on thirst, activity, and climate.

5. Add Fermented Foods (When Tolerated)

Naturally fermented foods are rich in probiotics and enzymes that support the gut microbiome — the trillions of bacteria that help digest food and regulate immunity (source).

Try this: Add 1–2 servings per day: sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, raw yogurt, or kefir. If you’re dealing with SIBO or candida, skip for now and choose a quality soil-based probiotic instead. Start with small amounts - fermented foods aren’t comfortable for everyone, so notice how your digestion responds.

6. Choose Whole, Real Food

Your gut recognizes real food — plants, proteins, healthy fats. It struggles with ultra-processed ingredients, refined oils, and excess sugar, which can feed harmful bacteria and slow motility.

Try this:
Build meals around fiber, color, and diversity. Think: greens, beans, olive oil, nuts, seeds, simple proteins, fermented condiments. If your digestion needs a reset, temporarily remove gluten, dairy, alcohol, and refined sugar to calm inflammation.

Why It Works

Digestion is shaped by many small, everyday factors: how you eat, what you eat, hydration, stress, and the health of your gut microbiome. Supporting those foundations consistently can make meals feel simpler and digestion more comfortable.
