Digestive Bitters Recipe (for Digestion + Bloating Relief)
A simple, natural way to support healthy digestion. These DIY digestive bitters are made with a blend of bitter herbs traditionally used to stimulate digestive secretions and support digestion before meals.
What Are Digestive Bitters?
Digestive bitters are herbal formulas that trigger your body’s natural digestive response.
When the bitter compounds touch your tongue, they signal your brain via the vagus nerve, prompting the release of stomach acid (HCl), bile, and enzymes—the exact components your body needs to break down food and absorb nutrients efficiently.
Bitter flavors once had a more regular place in the diet through foods like bitter greens, roots, and herbs. Digestive bitters offer a concentrated way to bring that bitter taste back before a meal.
The Science Behind Bitters
Your tongue and stomach both contain bitter taste receptors (T2Rs). When activated, these receptors signal your body to produce digestive hormones, increase saliva and bile flow, and prepare the stomach to receive food.
This signaling is part of the broader digestive response that helps prepare the gastrointestinal tract for food.
Benefits of Digestive Bitters
Digestive bitters have traditionally been used to:
Relieve bloating, gas, and heartburn
Support stomach acid and enzyme production
Promote bile flow for fat digestion
Ease nausea and indigestion
Support regular elimination
Note: Avoid this bitters blend during pregnancy. If pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your healthcare provider before using herbal bitters.
Bitters and Low Stomach Acid
Low stomach acid, or hypochlorhydria, can interfere with the breakdown and absorption of nutrients and contribute to uncomfortable digestive symptoms. Low HCl can interfere with digestion and the absorption of nutrients, including iron, vitamin B12, calcium, and zinc.
Digestive bitters are one simple way to support digestive secretions before meals—especially when combined with a balanced diet and mindful eating habits.

Key Herbs for Digestion
Angelica Root – A warming digestive stimulant that supports secretion, absorption, and elimination. Relieves gas and that “too-full” feeling. (Avoid during pregnancy.)
Gentian Root – One of the most potent bitters, used for over 3,000 years to enhance stomach acid and enzyme production. Excellent for protein and fat digestion. (Avoid during pregnancy or when using antacids.)
Dandelion Root – A traditional bitter used to support digestion and bile flow.
Ginger Root – Warming and carminative; helps reduce bloating and promotes smooth digestion and bowel regularity.
Optional additions: lemon and orange peel for brightness, rosemary for a subtle herbal aroma.
How to Use Digestive Bitters
Take 1 dropperful (about ¼ tsp) directly on the tongue or in a splash of water 10–15 minutes before meals to stimulate digestion.
